Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

This is the famous and iconic Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, which represents a sad story about tourism in Japan.
Until 2006 Japan had low tourism at under 6.5 million overseas visitors a year. Now we are facing an increase to about 40 million in the year of the Olympics 2020. For years two places were built up as tourism hotspots: Tokyo and Kyoto. Kyoto received a huge increase in tourists, so inundated with the swarm of tourists that the locals call it “tourism pollution”, which belies the resentment and the severity of the problem. The Japanese looked around to see how other countries deal with tourism inundation and found that Venice has it much worse. The character of Venice is now gone, as the piazzas are so packed with cruise ship visitors that there is no space for locals any more. Kyoto is feeling a lot like that now. Where the Teramachi shopping street is no longer welcoming to local shoppers, but instead caters almost exclusively to tourists, both domestic and foreign. To get that perfect Arashiyama Bamboo Grove Photo I had to get up at 4.30am. And even then there were people already there. [This photo is] a story of ‘expectation’ vs. ‘Reality’. It’s not [normally] peaceful and tranquil, it’s teeming with tourists from about 7am to the evening, non-stop, everyday. After one hour of trying, I managed to get one good photo. Just one. This is my great accomplishment.
